Trees are amazing living beings, responsible for cleaning the air we breathe and purifying the water we drink. Trees make up the foundation of almost all terrestrial eco-systems. But unfortunately, trees are vanishing from the face of the Earth at an astonishing rate.

Throughout the world, about 900 million trees are cut down annually. This equates to about 2.47 million trees cut down every day. 

As the world seeks to slow the pace of climate change, preserve wildlife, and support billions of people, trees inevitably hold a major part of the answer. Yet the mass destruction of trees—deforestation—continues, sacrificing the long-term benefits of standing trees for short-term gain.

Deforestation affects the people and animals where trees are cut, as well as the wider world. Some 250 million people living in forest and savannah areas depend on trees for subsistence and income—many of them among the world’s poorest rural communities.
